The Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada’s Annual Leadership Seminar took place in Calgary on May 13 – 15, parallel to CYM Canada’s Triennial National Convention. 30 members of starshe ‘yuntatsvo’ and young ‘druzhynnyky’ representing the Edmonton, Calgary, Etobicoke, and Mississauga branches as well as one guest from Ukraine attended.

The seminar, organized and led by Natalie Tchoryk and Andrea Kardasz was based on three main modules: ‘Leadership’, ‘Community organizations’ and ‘Structure of a National Convention’. In addition, the final Leadership Seminar session entailed the presentation of projects by participants of the prior year’s Seminar, as part of their overall assessment.

The focus of the Leadership module was based on learning the various forms, characteristics and features of good leadership in addition to establishing goals and creating a vision. The module on ‘Community organizations’ focused on the various umbrella organizations, such as UCC and UWC, their organizational structure and our interaction as well as CYM’s role and in the broader Ukrainian community. The module on the ‘Structure of a National Convention’ was aimed to give the participants a better understanding of the reporting, scrutinizing and adopting of reports presented by the elected National Executive as well as the adoption of far-reaching resolutions that affect daily life at the individual branch level.

On Sunday morning, after Divine Liturgy at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Calgary, the final Leadership Seminar session entailed the presentation of projects by participants of the prior year’s Seminar, as part of their overall assessment as well as the presentation of awards to those young members who successfully finished all three leadership program modules: Kyria Bacinski and Roxoliana Iszcenko from Edmonton, and Katherine Kolesnik from Mississauga.

The National Executive of CYM in Canada thanks and congratulates all Leadership Seminar participants and wishes them all the best in their future endeavors in particular within our organization. A sincere thank you to the organizers of the Seminar, Natalie Tchoryk and Andrea Kardasz who generously gave of their time and effort for the benefit of our future leaders.
