On the second day of our virtual recreational camp, we travelled from Toronto to Kharkiv where we learned a lot about the city’s history and culture.
The campers received a brief lesson in history since Kharkiv was the capital of Ukraine in 1930 when, as a result of a show trial during Stalin’s repressions, the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM) and Spilka Vyzvolennya Ukrainy (SVU) were liquidated.
Today’s arts and crafts lesson was solely focussed on the tradition of making a ‘korovay’, the tradional Ukrainian wedding cake and all of its symbolism, thanks to podruha Natalia Schturyn.
