St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church Queanbeyan Celebrates 50 Years

On Sunday the 19th of November 2017, St Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Queanbeyan, celebrated its parish feast day of the archangel Michael and the 50th anniversary of the consecration of the Church.

Many parishioners and guests gathered together to celebrate this Jubilee with a Divine Liturgy sung by the Church Choir. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by long-serving parish priests, Fr. Mitr. Dmytro Seniw and Fr. Oleh Stefanyshyn along with present parish priest Fr Volodymyr Kilineckyj. A homily was given by Fr. Seniw who had also said a brief history of the Church.

Concluding the Divine Liturgy was a Panakhyda in commemoration of all builders, founders and parishioners who have passed away to eternity. A group photo was taken at the steps of the Church commemorating this special anniversary.

The jubilee reception took place at the Ukrainian House in Queanbeyan. Honorary Ukrainian guests greeted the parish with its jubilee celebration. Among these guests were Ukrainian Ambassador Mykola Kulinich, Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Sydney, Jaroslav Duma, Chairman of the Diocesan Pastoral Council of the UGCC Yuriy Fedyshin from Melbourne, the Directorate of the Ukrainian Credit Union Dnister, Andriy Pavuk, and the General Secretary of the Ukrainian Youth Association Markian Stefanyshyn.

The honorary diploma of the Embassy of Ukraine in Australia for long-term work was awarded to the head of the Parish Council of St Michael’s in Queanbeyan, Mrs Olga Domitryak, who, along with her deceased husband, stood at the root of the Ukrainian Church and community in Queanbeyan.

St. Michael has a special place in Ukrainian history. Many churches and monasteries in Ukraine are named after him. A historical example is the St. Michael’s Golden-domed Cathedral in Kiev, which became a protection for the heroes of the Maidan – said the Ukrainian ambassador Mykola Kulinich in his speech.
