2019 marks the 110th anniversary of the birth and the 60th anniversary of the assassination of the leader of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), Stepan Bandera. The OUN (b) leadership declares that the struggle to maintain Ukraine’s independence has entered a new phase.

Today, we believe that Ukrainians need to defend and strengthen the Ukrainian state. Its existence can in no way be called into questions by actions that can actually destroy the state. Discussions about a new “Maydan,” a “real” revolution, or the cult of “battling with corruption” can not deny the fact that Ukrainian society and the institutions of power have developed and grown stronger. It may not be the state that we want, but following the Revolution of Dignity we are on the right path.

A successful revolution may quickly bring new political forces to power, but it can not change the outlook of Ukrainians as swiftly, having been subjected to various occupation regimes over centuries. We are cognisant, that the failings of our social life, including corruption resulting from a post-soviet system of power distribution within old government structures (often having been simply renamed rather than substantively changed) combined with apathy and low levels of personal and professional culture pervasive amongst most of our fellow citizens, means that the struggle facing us is great and we have much to accomplish. Which is why today, like never before, we need solidarity and self-confidence in our own abilities.
