The National Executive of CYM Australia expresses sympathy with the passing of Fr. Mitr. Zenon Khorkavyj.

Fr Zenon – one of the oldest priests of the Ukrainian Catholic diocese. An icon painter, collector of Ukrainian antiquities, icons, embroidery, pysankas, ceramics and much more.

Father Zenon was born on 5th of April 1936 in Ukraine in the village of Rakovets, Ternopil region. He endured the struggles of the Second World War as his childhood was in this turbulent time. After the war, he spent time in the refugee camps of Germany. Later, the family of Father Zenon – parents Wasyl and Rozalia and three brothers moved to Australia where they first resided in various refugee camps before settling in Melbourne.

Father Zenon served Vladyka Ivan Prashko, who sent him to the theological studios to Rome. He first studied at the Lesser Seminary, and then at St. Seminary. Yosofat on Gianicolo.

All these experiences prepared Fr Zenon to his pastoral work and interest in iconography – icon painting and love for sacral and folk art.

May the Lord God receive his immortal soul to the kingdom of heaven, and here on earth will remain his eternal memory!
