Our oseredok congregated for its monthly Apel meeting this past Saturday, April 1. This month, our cymivtsi payed homage to the tragic Chernobyl disaster which happened in the early hours of Saturday, 26 April 1986. Within the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant an explosion occurred which released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere. This spread over much of Western USSR and Europe. It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale.
Organizations such as AUYA exist to keep the memories alive of those who passed away in this disaster. Our tradition of educating youth about culture and history puts an emphasis on the importance and successes of the Ukrainian people, but it does not overlook the heavier occurrences in the history of the country.
The month of April remembers the significance of this event.
