For the first time in its 66-year history, Veselka is closed to summer camp and events due to COVID-19. But that has not stopped activity at the Oselia. Thanks to generous donors like you, we have been maintaining and upgrading facilities so that one day soon we can welcome back joyful Ukrainian children and continue our mission of raising them to be informed and proactive citizens and community leaders.
We would like to update you on the progress of the Veselka Revitalization Plan:
Pool repair: Repair of Veselka’s 50-year old pool is approximately 75% complete. Last summer, our contractor began refurbishment of the pool with the removal of the concrete decking. Excavation work exposed broken and collapsed pipes running around the perimeter of the pool. This process also uncovered additional deficiencies with our aging pool which had to be addressed. The old plumbing was removed and replaced with new piping. The pool walls and floor were repaired in a manner which will ensure the continued enjoyment of the pool for years to come. Despite COVID-19 delays, work on the pool resumed in the spring and has continued to the present day. Currently, the pool walls and floor are being prepared for a finish coat of epoxy in Ocean Blue. We anticipate that pool coping and coping, decking will be installed in the coming weeks. The restoration of the pool should be completed shortly thereafter.
Sts Volodymyr and Olha Chapel: We are replacing the weathered shingles with cedar shingles and other minor repairs are planned.
This is wonderful progress for which we thank Camp Administration and our donors – but there is still more to be done.
Pool house: The roof is leaking and must be replaced, along with its windows. Change rooms, showers and washrooms also need to be upgraded for campers and guests. We are in urgent need of funding to begin this work so it can be completed before next year’s camp season.
We would also like to provide an update on our Investing for the Future Fundraising Campaign:
We have raised 87% of our fundraising goal – only $115,000 more is needed.
Over 120 families and counsellors have made donations, along with our CYM branches, community organizations and corporate donors. Our youth have also organized successful fundraising events. But we need the support of all our members, alumni, and the broader Ukrainian community. We are so close – only $115,000 more to reach our fundraising goal of $900,000.
If you’ve already given, thank you, we are deeply grateful for your support. Please consider giving again. If you haven’t yet donated to the Investing for the Future Campaign, please donate today. A donation in any amount will be doubled to a maximum of $50,000 by CYM St. Catharines and makes a big difference when pooled with other donations. With your support, we will return to an improved Veselka in 2021!
