Bohdan Baran.  January 6, 1943 – August 3, 2015.

Born a Canadian citizen in Prnjavor, Bosnia.  Son of the late Ivan Baran of Sydney, N.S., and the late Anna Baran (née Vasylyshyn) of Banja Luka country, Bosnia.  Son-in-law of Anna (late Ivan) Lazar.

Came to Canada at 17 with his parents and four sisters, Halya (Volodymyr) Semcesen, Slavka (late Yaroslav) Selemba, Sonia (late John) Tkach, and Stephanie Baran.

Married Stephanie Lazar in 1969, the Summer of Love, in Hamilton, Ontario.

Father to Myroslav (Larysa), Yaroslav (Tara), Ivanna (Ben) and Larysa.  Grandfather to Zoia, Ariana, Sophia, Eliseya, Emilia and Julia.

Husband.  Father.  Grandfather.  Tailor.  Artist.  Teacher.  Pedagogue.  Whittler.  Mushroom hunter.  Cook extraordinaire.  One of the most gifted linguists, instructors and storytellers you will ever meet.  Full of life.  Full of colour.

A patriot — of both Canada and Ukraine.  Proud member, and former national president, of the Ukrainian Youth Association.  Dedicated his life to Ukraine’s freedom from oppression.

Lived an extremely rich life.  Touched countless people with his knowledge and zest for the whole world around us.

Passed away, surrounded by loving family, at his cottage near Parry Sound, Ontario.  He looked around himself, and saw that everything was okay.  He would be leaving his family in good shape.

He will be sorely missed — by those who knew him and loved him, and by those who are too young to have known and appreciated his genius.

The end of an era.
