Baraboo, skiing, friends, sledding – those are just a few words to describe zymovyj tabir. In the five short days that we spend in the “brown house” we create a lifetime of memories. Not only do we ski and snowboard at Cascade, but we skate on the pool, play snow football, sled and go kolyaduvaty. Many people might be worried about not knowing how to ski or snowboard, but don’t worry there are instructors that will teach a student at any level. Sledding down the steep hills on Oselia makes it feel as though sledding is more a thrill than an everyday activity. Not only are the various activities the most fun anyone can have over winter break, but the down times playing cards, cooking, playing the keyboard, singing around a vohnyk, and talking with friends add to the great experience. At tabir, there is no time to be bored – there is always something to do. Many people don’t realize how beautiful Oselia is in the winter time, covered in sparkling snow. This is a place where photos are always gorgeous and that taborovyky wait to see all year round. Don’t debate about coming to zymovyj! Sign up and you will soon make memories like the rest of the taborovyky do every year!

From December 26-30th, twenty-seven members of starshe yunatsvo from the CYM branches of Chicago (M. Pavlushkov branch) and Palatine (col. D. Vitovskyj branch), along with seven counselors/vykhovnyky, attended the 2012 winter camp at oselia Beskyd in Baraboo, WI. This was our 17th annual winter camp which is intended to reward the active members of starshe yunatsvo

As in the past winter camps, there were various activities:

  • hikes through oselya during the winter and snow covered landscape
  • “terenova hra” – “capture the flag”
  • pond hockey and ice skating on the pool
  • snow football
  • tobogganing and snowboarding on the various terrain and man-made ramps (courtesy of yunatsvo & vykhovnyky)
  • campfire sing-a-longs, focusing on Ukrainian Christmas carols
  • all day skiing/snowboarding and night skiing/snowboarding excursions at the nearby ski resort -Cascade Mountain
  • learning how to cook as they took turns in preparing lunch and dinner meals for the camp
  • various “hutirkas” related to winter topics and current Ukrainian events in the news, topped off with a friendly competition of “CYM-kademics” (a game based on the questions covered during these various hutirkas)
  • Christmas caroling & visits to many of the nearby Ukrainian families in Baraboo, Merrimac, Lake Delton, Madison & Wisconsin Dells

The yunatsvo attending this year’s winter camp are very grateful to the vykhovnyky for taking the time out from work and from their families to help make this yet another successful and fun-filled zymovyj tabir.
