On Saturday, September 20th, after a delightful and relaxing summer break, members of Branch 54 “Chersones” of the Ukrainian American Youth Association (CYM) in Stamford, CT returned to kick off the new academic year. The Bulavnyj (youth director) Jurij Priatka, welcomed back the nearly 50 children of varying ages – of which approximately eight joined the branch just this year – and guaranteed them that their Vychovnyky (instructors) had worked hard throughout the summer to prepare an interesting program for them for the upcoming year. Typically, the program will consist of fascinating group discussions, field trips, contests and projects, many of which will coincide with several anniversaries this year of important historical significance to Ukraine. These anniversaries are annually selected by the World Executive of CYM. This year’s anniversaries include:

1. The 200th birthday of Ukraine’s most famous poet and national bard, Taras Shevchenko
2. The 75th anniversary of the proclamation of independence of the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine
3. The 65th anniversary of the reestablishment of CYM in America
4. The 10th anniversary of the Orange Revolution

CYM meetings are held every Saturday immediately after the ending of Ukrainian School at St. Basil’s Seminary in Stamford, CT. For more information, please call 203-550-3528.
