CYM London Ispyty Awards 2016‏

Oceredok CYM London were celebrating at a special CYM shodyny on Saturday 23rd April. At the start of their regular Saturday activities the whole oceredok took part in a ceremony to recognise those who had passed their CYM exams and to receive badges for achieving ‘Stupyn I, II and III Molodshy’ and ‘Stupyn I Starshy.’

Yunatstvo across both Molodshy and Starshy groups have been working hard over the past few months to revise their knowledge of CYM, Ukrainian history, geography, nature and in particular the ‘Zakony Yunatstva’ or ‘rules to live by’ to be a good CYMivits.

With so many yunatstvo taking part, the exams, both verbal and written, took place over several Saturdays in March 2016. Ispytova Komisiya were very impressed with the high standard of answers given by many of the children. KY representative, Podryha Hania Szlachetko,   who attended one exam session commented “I have never seen such a high standard – I have seen children before who have been able to say a few lines of a poem in Ukrainian, but many of these children could reel off all the verses of not just one, but several poems off by heart.”

In total, the following badges were given out : nine 1st Level Exam for Molodshe Yunatstvo “Otroka”, eleven 2nd Level Exam for Molodshe Yunatstvo “Vistovij, eleven for 3rd Level Exam for Molodshe Yunatstvo “Zvidun” and four for 1st Level Exam for Starshe Yunatstvo “Voyin”. As part of the badge giving ceremony, yunatstvo also pledged their oath while holding the CYM flag and recited ‘Slovo’ (for Molodshy) and ‘Obitnytsya’ (for Starshy’).

Thanks go to everyone who helped the children pass, and especially to the vyhovnyky who have worked so hard with the children over the past months.

  1. I’m most interested in learning poetry and the relevance to CYM
    Surely the learning of poetry is an Ukrainian school function.
    Do other scouting organisations learn poetry to be recited?
    Please don’t get me wrong – there is a massive place for the arts but surely you are repeating what is taught at school.
    I’m a great believer on the physical aspect of CYM life – an exercise which seems to be increasingly ignored by the education bodies
    Are there exams in First aid – fire building – plant recognition – climbing trees – simple camping skills etc etc?

    • Firstly, apologies again for the delay in replying to your query.

      Within CYM ispyty there are a range of vymohy (see Pravelnyk CYM from page 155 and is available on CYMnet). These include knowing poems (but doesn’t state that they have to be taught in CYM), along with First Aid, fire building, plant recognition, physical activities, etc., all with varying degrees, depending on the ispyt being taken. Below are the vymohy for 1 stupen molodshoho yunatstva:

      Вимоги (на здобуття ступенів:)

      1. Знає, що таке Рій Молодшого Юнацтва СУМ.

      2. Вміє пояснити, чому треба молитися і чому треба слухати бать-

      ків та виховників.

      3. Розуміє значення слів «Україна», «українець» та розкаже, як ви-

      глядає український національний герб і прапор.

      4. Має загальні знання про Україну: а) столиця (назва, розташу-

      вання і населення), б) місцевість походження батьків і в) дві

      найбільші ріки, моря і гори України.

      5. Знає 3 українські вірші, 3 українські пісні і 3 українські казки

      або перекази.

      6. Вміє пояснити: а) чому треба митися зранку і ввечері, чистити

      зуби, мити руки після занять і перед їжею, а ноги перед сном,

      б) чому треба готувати чистий одяг і взуття звечора і в) чому

      треба тримати лад і порядок в кімнаті, в школі і в домівці.

      7. Вміє послуговуватися годинником для визначення часу і ко-

      ристуватися телефоном.

      8. Вміє подати особисті дані (ім’я та прізвище власне й батьків,

      дату народження, адресу, номер телефону) та ім’я і прізвище

      виховника і його адресу.

      9. Знає, які небезпеки загрожують і як уберегтися від: вогню,

      газу, горючих рідин, електрики, води, спеки, холоду, вуличного

      руху тощо.

      10. Вміє назвати декілька рослин, квіток, дерев, птахів і декілька

      звірят та розкаже дещо про кожну з них.

      11. Вміє продемонструвати якусь вмілість з мистецтва, виявляючи

      зацікавлення в одній із ділянок: спів, гра на музичному інстру-

      менті, рисування, малювання, танок, декламування, фізичні

      вправи тощо.

      In addition, CYM is not a scouting organisation. The aim of CYM is – виховувати українську молодь в християнському і національному дусі, i.e. to educate Ukrainian youth in a Christian and national spirit.
