The year 2008, in which the Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada is commemorating
its 60th Anniversary, is significant because it coincides with Ukraine’s 17th anniversary of
Independence, a year in which Ukraine comes closer to joining the European Union and
NATO, and it marks the the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor - Ukrainian Famine
Genocide.
Members of the Ukrainian Youth Association (UYA) born and raised in Canada cannot
always fully understand the unique experience of their parents and grandparents.
However, the deep connection and love they feel in their hearts for God, Ukraine and all
things Ukrainian personifies the UYA’s motto “God and Ukraine”. This connection with
Ukraine is solidified through practice of Ukrainian traditions and the study of Ukrainian
history, culture and art forms.
In recognition of this, the National Executive considered many projects on the occasion
of its 60th Anniversary to commemorate and celebrate this important milestone. One of
the major projects included a fundraising project to support and sustain future
programming initiatives for youth. The National Executive commissioned a limited
edition lithograph-print of Archangel Michael, the patron Saint of the UYA and Kyiv, the
capital city of Ukraine, by well-known Ukrainian-Canadian artist Bohdan Holowacki.
Bohdan Holowacki was born in 1943 in Ukraine. He settled in Canada in 1980. Bohdan
graduated with honours from the National Institute of Applied and Decorative Art in Lviv
(1975). He works in oils, graphics, and iconography. Bohdan decorated Sts. Peter and
Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Scarborough and St. John’s Ukrainian Catholic
Church in St. Catherines. He had several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous
group shows in North America. His art can be found in many collections in North
America, England and Ukraine. Bohdan is on the Board of the Ukrainian Canadian Art
Foundation, a member of the Association of Ukrainian Cultural Activists and the past
President of the Ukrainian Association of Visual Artists of Canada. Bohdan Holowacki is
a long-time supporter and friend of the Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada.
The National Executive is excited about this project and feels confident that this iconprint
will appeal not only to UYA members and their families, but to a wider Ukrainian-
Canadian audience and art lovers in general. Its theme lends itself as an exceptionally
beautiful gift for many occasions: christenings, birthdays, first communions, weddings,
namesake days and graduations.
The lithograph is selling for $150 unframed. Order forms are available in every branch
across Canada or on the web at www.cym.org/ca . Phone orders can be placed with the
National Executive Office at 416-537-2007. In addition, UYA representatives will attend
various Ukrainian events throughout the year enabling patrons to buy directly.
Don’t wait and buy your limited-edition print today! Thank you in advance for your
support.
